Zelia ZZ Tan – Accelerating Dimension

Professionally trained, Zelia ZZ Tan has been exploring on how different media could intersect with dance, such as how motion capture and digital technology could extend the expressions of bodies. How far could the bodies of dance artists go? Zelia ZZ Tan parallels reality with the surreal in Accelerating Dimension, where audiences will be prompted to response to this particular question.

Hiroaki Umeda – MMM – Installations by Hiroaki Umeda and indivisible substance

The collaboration with Hiroaki Umeda began with a conversation on virtual space three years ago. Umeda began his explorations on the possibility of digital technology and its applicability on dance, then returned to the core of creation – dance and its connections with the audience. His indivisible substance, a piece that interplay between the physical and digital realm, concludes his three-year investigation.

MMM – Installations by Hiroaki Umeda will showcase three installations from different periods of his creative journey which allows a more comprehensive understanding on his body of art and style. The impact on viewers’ senses are beyond generations, where they will be surfing along the endless waves of senses and perceptions in the realm of physics, psyche and imagination.

Tsang Tsui-shan – Chroma 11

Chroma 11 began with a love story.

It is not a new idea to collaborate art with technology. This is not the beginning, nor is it the end, but a pathway that connects the past with the future. And it is always the heart that serves as the key.

The collaboration between Freespace and director Tsang Tsui-shan began with her dance film Ward 11 back in 2019, where Chroma 11 is developed from the story of the dance artists of Ward 11 Aaron Khek Ah-hock and Ix Wong Thien-pau. With the use of VR images, life and death, past and present may now coexist and overlap. Could the border of time be redefined in this digital era? It may not be a final goodbye but a “reunion” that lies between life and death.

Lu Yang – DOKU, The Binary World

I contacted Dr Ashley Lee Wong for a discussion on virtual space two years ago and visited her MetaObjects studio which was co-founded with Andrew Crowe, she visited Freespace in return. I got to know Lu Yang and their digital works through Dr Wong which also initiated our collaborations.

DOKU, The Binary World is the elaboration of Lu Yang’s pervious work Dokusho Dokushi. With the binary combinations of deities from the six realms of Buddhist reincarnation and their corelating avatars and sets, the real-time performance will be simultaneously happening and interacting in Hong Kong and Sydney. Lu Yang has created a virtual environment where there is no gender and border, all avatars are part of Lu Yang. Time and space interchanges in no time in Lu Yang’s control.

Chan Wai-lok – In the Cloud

Chan Wai-lok is one of the up-and-coming young choreographers in Hong Kong. He was chosen to participate in the Museum of Human E-motions online residency, co-organised by West Kowloon Freespace and four other organisations from Europe and Asia. He reflected on the online exchanges with artists from Europe and Asia, and together with his observations on how the pandemic had changed the communications among people, led to the creation of In the Cloud.

In the Cloud is a temporary compartment at the outdoor podium of Freespace, it is also an installation where visitors can privately connect to the artist. A little bit of interaction, a small and simple game, makes up to a short but cosy time with the artist.
